Aqua21’s point-of-use water treatment system has been shortlisted for Breakthrough of the Year in the BusinessGreen Technology Awards 2017.

Now in its third year BusinessGreen celebrates the brightest and boldest entrepreneurs, engineers, innovators and investors from across the green technology sector and will bring together around 200 leading executives and technologists from some of the UK’s most exciting clean tech companies.

Aqua21 has been shortlisted in the Breakthrough of the Year category, celebrating new and innovative ideas in the clean tech sector. The shortlisting recognises Aqua21’s ground-breaking technology which can treat water using ozonation at point of use on a small scale – for example on the scale of a tap or standpipe.

Trevor Costello, Chief Technology Officer at Aqua21 said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted amongst many other innovative products and technologies in the BusinessGreen awards.

“When we invented the Aqua21 system we didn’t necessarily intend for it to be ‘green technology’. We were looking for ways to miniaturise ozonation technology and make it much more adaptable and low cost to treat water on a small scale – so that it could be of use in a huge range of situations. However, by its very nature this is a clean and sustainable technology, and as we refined the technology, we discovered a huge range of scenarios where Aqua21 could be of benefit in an environmental way, for example in reducing chemicals in water disinfection.

Mr Costello adds: “Currently all water in westernised countries is treated in a centralised way to drinking standard, yet only 2% is actually drunk, the rest is used is range of situations from agriculture and healthcare to washing cars and farmyards. This is a huge waste of energy and water because many of these situations do not require drinking standard water. With Aqua21 technology water is treated at point of use for whatever that use is, with no waste.

“Equally our new technology uses much less power than traditional ozone treatment systems and we are working on a prototype kettle that could be powered by solar. In this way, we could bring clean, safe water to poor parts of the world where people have no access to clean water or power.”

The awards will take place on December 2nd in London. You can see the full shortlist here http://events.businessgreen.com/technologyawards/static/2017-shortlist
